Sandhaven Beach offers the traditional seaside experience of making sandcastles, dipping toes in the sea, writing names in the sand, exploring rockpools or simply playing family and childhood seaside games all day including digging a big hole!
It is a recipient of Keep Britain Tidy's Blue Flag Award, in recognitionof it being one of the best beaches in the country.
The beach and surrounding area is often home to many events, such as sandcastle competitions, kids entertainment and lots more.
It's also a great spot to enjoy a game of volleyball (volleyball nets are in place during the summer), frisbee, football and other beach games. You can also have a go at some watersports, South Shields Surf School offers lessons in paddle boarding or surfing as well as equipment hire if you don't want a lesson.
Behind the beach is a lovely promenade that stretches the length of the seafront and on to the scenic clifftop paths.
And behind the beach is Ocean Beach Pleasure Park, The Dunes and South Marine Park with its miniature steam railway, as well as a number of seaside restaurants, cafes or pubs.
