Making an Insurance Claim - Tips to Follow

Posted 17 August by Steve Dart

Should something happen to your static home or your caravan, the chances are that you'll want to contact your insurer to check whether you can make a claim. Caravan insurance claims may range from weather damage to criminal damage, or simply losing your keys! No-one wants something to happen to their beloved mobile home, but should the worst happen, it's good to know what to do.

Check your policy

It's a good idea to have a printout of your policy, which you can access regardless of whether you have internet access. Also keep a copy saved in your emails, in case you cannot get hold of the hard copy. Ideally, make two copies and store one at the caravan and one at home, as you might be in either location when something goes wrong with your caravan. Before you make the call to start the claims process, read the policy through very carefully. It may be that you are not covered, or you haven't done what was required of you in order to be covered, in which case you can save yourself the hassle of calling. It should be good news, in which case you can phone safe in the knowledge that your policy covers this incident. Reading through your policy will also give you a chance to check any exclusion or limitations that may apply.

In the case of crime

If a criminal act is committed involving your static home, the way you deal with an insurance claim is slightly different. First of all, make sure that you and all members of your family are safe. Next, contact the police. Crimes may include theft, attempted theft, malicious damage or vandalism. For any of these crimes, the police will provide you with a crime reference number, which you will need to keep safe. When you call to make your claim, you'll need to provide your insurer with this crime reference number.

Be swift

Fill out your claim form as soon as possible. The form will ask for repair estimates, but if you haven't had a chance to get these sorted yet, then send the form and declare that any estimates will follow shortly. As soon as you have the repair estimates, send these to your insurer too. The faster you are at sending in the form and getting repair estimates, the faster the claim can be processed.

Stay calm

Whatever has happened, try to stay calm. If a crime has been committed, then getting in touch with the police as soon as possible will help you stay calm. Everyone wants to sort out your claim as quickly and simply as possible, so try to stay calm, be patient when necessary and be swift in your own actions to help the process run smoothly.

Hopefully, these tips for caravan insurance claims will make the process faster, smoother and more straightforward. Just remember to have your policy always to hand and to act swiftly when you want to make a claim.
